Bret Huntman has a Bachelor of Science degree from Central Michigan University and 20 years of experience in landscaping. He is a Certified Michigan Natural Shoreline Management Professional. Bret specializes in the design and creation of sustainable and healthy outdoor living spaces, including landscaped gardens, patios, paths, and retaining walls.
Bret grew up primarily in the Brooklyn and Flint, Michigan areas. Following two of his four siblings, he moved north in 1993. When he's not working, he loves hiking, cross-country skiing, and hunting (mushrooms and certain delicious, landscape-mauling wildlife) in the north woods, as well as swimming and kayaking. His friends and family remark on how observant he is outdoors. He notices subtle sounds, the direction the wind is blowing, individual forest trees he has observed over decades, and the shrubs, ferns, sedges, and wildflowers that make up the understory in any location. He also has an uncanny sense of direction, perhaps related to his deep interest in astronomy.
Wanting to help everyone bring the beauty and vitality of northern Michigan's natural places into their yards, Bret studied the use of Michigan native plants in landscape design and gardening. With the help of numerous mentors, peers, team members, and cross-country-ski friends he has grown "North by Nature." Special thanks go out to his Mom & Dad, Jen, David, Lee, Bill, Jason, and Chris!
North by Nature is a member of the Wildflower Association of Michigan and the Michigan Nursery & Landscape Association.
